Alternatives offers a number of free non-12-step meetings that are meant to serve as support both for our clients and the general community. We’ve decided to focus on offerings that are uncommon in the area specifically in order to expand the number of options for people in the vicinity of one of the Alternatives centers (Los Angeles, The San-Fernando Valley and Orange County at the moment). We offer two SMART Recovery meetings and a weekly Moderation Management meeting to help those seeking both abstinence and moderation the free help they need and deserve.

SMART Recovery Family & Friends

Mondays 6:00 – 7:30PM / Tuesdays 11:30 – 1:00 PM / Sundays 4:00 – 5:30PM

SMART Recovery Family & Friends is a science-based, secular alternative to Al-Anon and Johnson Intervention. Our method is based on the tools of SMART Recovery and CRAFT (Community Reinforcement Approach & Family Training). SMART Recovery Family & Friends meetings help those who are affected by the substance abuse, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, or other addictions of a loved one.

The meetings share SMART Recovery tools that can be implemented by CSOs to help with emotional upsets, effective communication methods when dealing with loved ones, and more. Techniques employed within the CRAFT Program (Community Reinforcement Approach and Family Training) are shared for the benefit of meeting attendees. We believe that family participation in the recovery process is extremely important and hope that by offering these meetings we can help families who are in need.

Moderation Management

Tuesday 6:30pm to 8:00pm – Led by Dr. Marc Kern

Moderation Management (MM) is a behavioral change program and national support group network for people concerned about their drinking and who desire to make positive lifestyle changes. MM empowers individuals to accept personal responsibility for choosing and maintaining their own path, whether moderation or abstinence. MM promotes early self-recognition of risky drinking behavior, when moderate drinking is a more easily achievable goal. MM is run by lay members who came to the organization to resolve personal issues and stayed to help others.

Moderation Management offers participants a supportive mutual-help environment that encourages people who are concerned about their drinking to take action to cut back or quit drinking before drinking problems become severe. A nine-step professionally reviewed program, Moderation Management provides information about alcohol, moderate drinking guidelines and limits, drink monitoring exercises, goal setting techniques, and self-management strategies. As a major part of the program, members also use the nine steps to find balance and moderation in many other areas of their lives, one small step at a time.

MM was the first moderation-based support and help entry on the the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) “Rethinking Drinking” website under Info and Help links. Moderation Management is also recognized as an evidence-based program, on a similar level to other mainstream rehabilitation therapies. It is, along with Moderate Drinking, listed on SAMSHA’s National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

Promoting successful recovery at Alternatives

Outcome studies indicate that professional programs which offer both moderation and abstinence have higher success rates than those that offer abstinence only. Clients tend to self-select the behavior change options which will work best for them. This is one of the basic premises that made us create Alternatives and we are proud to offer Moderation Management as a free service to help support that choice.
